In 2023, I had the opportunity to gain firsthand insights into a conflict that has persisted for decades. The conflict between the largest coal mine, El Cerrejón, and the local communities of Wayuu and Afro-Colombians in La Guajira, Colombia. Through interviews with representatives of these communities, my film explores the complex social and geographical dynamics in this region. The focus is on the conflicts surrounding the El Cerrejón mine and its impact on the local Wayuu and Afro-Colombian communities.

In "In the Shadow of the Mine," I examine these disputes from a critically geographic perspective. We delve into the socio-economic challenges and power dynamics that shape the lives of the people in the area. This project serves as a reflection on the interplay between human beings and the environment in a global context, with a particular emphasis on social justice and sustainable resource utilization.
